Ingredients
For the Cake:
- 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
- 1 cup (200g) sugar
- ½ cup (60g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 egg
- ½ cup (120ml) milk
- ¼ cup (60ml) vegetable oil
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ cup (120ml) hot water
For the Chocolate Frosting:
- ½ cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 ¾ cups (220g) powdered sugar
- ¼ cup (30g) cocoa powder
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2–3 tbsp (30–45ml) milk
Instructions
Making the Cake:
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and line an 8-inch round cake pan.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- Add egg, milk, oil, and vanilla extract. Mix well until combined.
- Pour in hot water and stir until the batter is smooth. (The batter will be thin – that’s normal!)
- Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Making the Frosting:
- Beat the softened butter until creamy.
- Add powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and vanilla. Mix well.
- Add milk, one tablespoon at a time, until smooth and spreadable.
Assembling the Cake:
- Once the cake is completely cool, spread the frosting evenly over the top.
- Slice and enjoy your delicious homemade chocolate cake!
